During this time of year, New Jersey motorists are advised to be extra careful as the roads may become slippery due to snow and ice. However, in addition to the change in weather, motorists should also be wary of negligent drivers on the road. And, as demonstrated in a recent motor vehicle accident, even police officers are vulnerable.
In Randolph Township, just a few miles west of Newark, a car collision between a patrol car and sport utility vehicle occurred at around 5:21 p.m. The patrol car was attempting to merge into an intersection when it was struck by an SUV trying to make a left turn. The impact of the auto accident forced the patrol car to slide across both lanes and into a driveway.
The 23-year-old driver of the SUV was unhurt. Unfortunately, the driver of the patrol car suffered numerous injuries, including a fractured right arm. He was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Police are investigating the incident for further details.
Typically, motor vehicle accidents can be prevented if motorists drive safely. This means that distracted driving and driving while intoxicated should be avoided. Also, drivers should always adhere to traffic regulations and adjust to road and weather conditions. If a driver fails to do so and causes an accident that leads to injuries to other people, the driver can held liable.
Being legally responsible for an accident comes at a price. A negligent driver, besides the possibility of losing driving privileges and paying penalties, can also be ordered by the court to pay damages to victims. This is understandable, as unsuspecting victims often suffer physical injuries as well as emotional trauma due to an accident. Newark victims can also have financial troubles due to medical expenses and lost wages.
