Motorists share New Jersey streets not only with other vehicles but also with pedestrians. As in any situation where people need to share, respecting each other’s rights is essential. Some motorists still forget this, however, and end up causing a pedestrian accident that can either cause injuries or turn fatal for a resident.
Such an accident recently occurred in Dumont County, several miles east of Newark. A 63-year-old woman was struck by a sports utility vehicle as she was crossing the street. The woman, who owned a dry cleaning business, was walking north when she was struck by a westbound SUV that another woman was driving. The impact of the collision threw the woman a considerable distance. First responders found her body under a tree. Paramedics administered CPR and then took her to a hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.
The police chief said that the woman was walking in the crosswalk during the time of the accident as proven by her shoes, which were left on the crosswalk. The driver claimed she did not see the woman in the crosswalk. Nonetheless, investigators said that the driver was cooperative during the investigation.
Yielding to pedestrians in a crosswalk is a basic requirement for New Jersey motorists. Failing to observe this rule, as well as other traffic regulations, and causing injury or death to someone else can render a driver responsible.
