Unsafe premises may lead to slip-and-fall accidents

by | Dec 3, 2012 | Premises Liability |

In Essex County, New Jersey, residents go to shopping malls, groceries and other public places. Residents expect that their visit on the premises will always be safe. It is the property owner’s responsibility to secure the area and remove all potential hazards to the public. A slip-and-fall accident is one of the many accidents that may occur inside shopping malls and groceries. A freshly mopped floor and icy sidewalks may lead customers to trip and sustain serious injuries.

The mayor of Evesham Township is improving and renovating long-forgotten and neglected properties. The City Council will use ax incentives for this project. New Jersey’s Local Development and Housing Law requires the Council to create a Planning Board for enlisting commercial properties that are abandoned by property owners.

After the deliberation is finished, the properties could be included in the redevelopment zones. From then on, developers will begin improvements on the properties. The properties that may be included are the ones that closed down because of competition. This project may also decrease the incidents of slip-and-fall accidents because of the planned renovations. Hazardous conditions should be prevented as much as possible by property owners together with the managers of the property.

If a slip-and-fall accident occurs, a person may sustain serious injuries. Major injuries can occur like broken bones, concussions, spinal cord injuries and brain injuries. Some of these injuries can cause a person temporary or permanent disability. The victim of a slip-and-fall accident can claim compensation in such a case.

People who suffer from slip-and-fall injuries may file a claim against the property owner. The property owner, if proven to be negligent, may be responsible to pay the compensation to the victims. The victims may need long-term rehabilitation and the medical costs can be expensive. Furthermore, if a slip-and-fall accident results in a fatality, the family of the deceased may file a wrongful death claim against the property owner.
